First Prototype system based on a Freescale MCF5272 Coldfire CPU. Using a Sharp 3.5" QVGA TFT LCD screen.

I'm still trying to figure out what made me choose the Coldfire platform initially - but as the project progressed, it became clear to me that support for Coldfire development seems to be dwindling and everyone is jumping on the ARM bandwagon.

Second Prototype system based on a Cogent CSB637 single board computer.

The ultra-small SBC measured just 1.75" x 2.5" and had an ARM 920T CPU, Broadcom 10/100 Ethernet PHI, and SDRAM, FLASH, and EPSON S1D3506 LCD Controller.

This SBC allowed for a much smaller format board, unfortunatly because it has several things we don't need, the per unit cost is higher than the unit cost goal for this project.

As you can see, all of the componets fit on a board that is smaller than our 3.5" TFT panel, and should fit in a final product designed for dual-gang box retrofit building installations.
